LA Travel Notes with Pearlshare

Last month we took you inside the urban oasis, that is renowned photographer Philip Dixon's
home, and the first pit-stop on our Spring Summer shoot, so this month we're taking you
further afield, teaming up with travel guide gurus, Pearlshare, to discover Los Angeles' hippest
hidden treasures, from Venice Beach boardwalk to the desert sands of Lancaster. Here are their
pick of the best hang-outs and must-see destinations:

Venice Beach

Rose Cafe-Restaurant This lofty, boho-chic eatery with two patios, a bar and a bakery,
serves a rustic Californian menu including treats such as a dreamy whipped Herb Lardo and
a juicy miso marinated Hanger Steak. However, what they are perhaps best known for is their
brunch menu that serves classic favourites as well as some unique twists such as a divine
pumpkin hummus and naan bread. They also serve an amazing cup of tea, which you can
enjoy out on their light, leafy terrace.

Venice Beach Boardwalk If you are
visiting the Los Angeles area, you owe it to
yourself to come to Southern California's
number one visitor attraction. Stretching
about one and a half miles along the manicured
sands of the Pacific Ocean, the boardwalk is
a large part of what makes Venice unique.

Salt & Straw This popular ice cream
chain out of Oregon, started by two
cousins, is known for inventive flavours
and fresh farm-sourced ingredients. Some
of their most popular mixes include the
Salted, Malted Chocolate Chip Cookie
Dough and the Almond Brittle with Salted
Ganache - however, if you’re feeling really
adventurous we promise you’re going
to love the Black Olive Brittle and Goats
Cheese. Trust us.

Santa Monica

Basement Tavern This hip cocktail lounge on lower level of an old house provides retro
drinks, light bites and live jazz to a young and enthusiastic crowd night after night. Whether
you're looking to dance your heart away or sit in the corner and take in the amazing sounds,
this is the place to go.

Funnel Mill of Santa Monica Funnel Mill focuses on coffee that is "syphon"-brewed one cup
at a time. It offers a wide selection of unique single-estate coffees, including the famous Kopi
Luwak, regarded by many to be the best coffee in the world. It may be a little expensive, but you
really do get what you pay for in terms of quality. Even if you’re not a coffee drinker, they also
offer a full traditional Japanese tea service - perfect for a special occasion or a even just for a bit
of luxury.

Santa Monica Farmers Market
This celebrated Sunday market boasts
colourful and healthy farm-fresh produce,
a variety of locally sourced meat and
dairy products, plus a host of flowers and
artisanal goods. They even have pony
rides on Sunday's for the little ones - did
someone say perfect photo opportunity?

Lancaster

Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve One of California's most special but least heard of natural
wonders. This state nature reserve within the Mojave Desert harbours the most consistent
blooms of California poppies, the state flower. Take a walk over the gentle rolling hills, following
the park's various hiking trails. The wildflower season lasts from March to May, and brings
even more colour to this already beautiful area.

Kinetic Brewing Company This exposed-brick hangout serves an internationally inspired
menu of pub eats and house-brewed beer, bringing a little bit of hipster magic to the streets
of Lancaster. The dedication to the love of the craft is apparent in the huge range of seasonal
and permanent new brews, both available on tap or in the bottle. Our personal favourite is the
Rusted Gear, a light and hoppy Amber Ale.

BLVD Farmers Market This weekly market, held every Thursday on The BLVD, is just one
of the wonderful recent projects from Lancaster council to harbour a special community spirit
in the city. Shop here for organic produce, fresh bread and baked treats, salsa, honey,
readymade food, and so much more at this family friendly event.
