We caught up with our Knitwear designer, Helen Newman
to get an insight into the Wrap design world and find out
what key pieces to be seen in this summer.
Can you tell us about yourself and what lead you to become a fashion designer?
My early interests in art and textiles lead me to start a Foundation Course where
I was able to specialise in Fashion. This initial year gave me the opportunities to
try all aspects of art, design and photography and then confirm I wanted to venture
into fashion and clothing. I was obsessed with fashion photography and dreamt
of working with magazines! I studied a degree in Fashion Design at Kingston
University which was very well supported by the industry with fantastic external
projects. My first job I took up a position in Italy, in a design studio that gave me
the opportunity to collaborate with many worldwide brands, designing, illustrating,
trend predicting and travelling. I've worked with many high-end designer and high
street brands and worked on shows for London fashion week. I also set up a baby
wear brand specialising in English Alpaca knitted sweaters and homeware. I have
been designing now for over 20 years!
Where do you draw inspiration from when designing new collections?
I find interiors a great source of inspiration. I love trailing antique shops for
interesting finds for my house and come across textiles, fabrics and colour that
can inspire clothing. I love vintage clothes, the detail, the craftsmanship and the
traditional stitch techniques. Photography, travel and people around me are also
a huge source of inspiration, colours of buildings and textures and patterns of the
things around you... you are always looking!
Which part of the design process do you enjoy the most and why?
I love sourcing pieces to inspire and get excited at how I can work from these to
develop new ideas. I have always had a love of drawing and I love illustration, so
sketching designs is one of my favourite processes. Seeing the garment come to
life is exciting, the shape and detail is so important to me, so I love styling too.
